Bible Prophecy

What Is the Rapture?

The 'rapture' refers to the moment, described by Paul, when believers — living and dead — are 'caught up' to meet the Lord at Jesus' return. Christians hold different views on its timing, but agree on its comfort: we will be with the Lord forever.

Where the Bible teaches it

Paul wrote that when the Lord returns, the dead in Christ will rise and living believers will be caught up together to meet Him. The Latin 'rapturo' ('caught up') gives us the word.

Different views, one hope

Sincere Christians disagree on when this happens relative to other end-times events. Paul's point, though, is pastoral: these words are meant to encourage and comfort, not to divide.

Why it matters

Whatever the timing, the promise is sure — death is not the end, Jesus is coming, and those who trust Him will be with Him forever.

Key Bible verses

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Therefore encourage one another with these words.

1 Thessalonians 4:18

In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet... we will be changed.

1 Corinthians 15:52
